A new project

I've been hired to work on a public art project. Originally, it was to be a mosaic on the floor of a bandshell. After talking with several experts, it is clear that this is not a good idea here in Minnesota. The water can get in and the freezing and thawing can (and does) cause the mosaic to break apart. Vertical outdoor surfaces are less problematic, but still have issues of their own. So I'm looking into a variety of options for the bandshell to present at my meeting. I'm going to be working on some designs as well. I'll keep you posted!

Last week

I did two mosaics last week. One was a commission of someone's grandmother, the other was just a fun piece I wanted to do. I might bring it to the mini-salon at SAMA, not sure yet...

Last two are done!

I grouted the last two mosaics today. Heron 24" x 24"
Pond Turtle 24" x 24"

I am going to deliver all six of them to the shippers tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for my drive. Supposed to get up to 6 inches overnight - again!

Movie of the pond turtle mosaic coming together

Seems like there should be some Benny Hill music playing! This is me today working on mosaic #5, the pond turtle. It's 24" X 24". I've framed all of the mosaics in the black squares to add unity with the ABC series. I've also realized that I should comb the top of my head before taking pictures from above.

The biggest one is done!

Today I grouted the largest mosaic! It's called "Morning at the Pond" and it is 30"h x 72"w. Here it is pre-grout. I'll post better pictures of all of these once I get some good ones taken and have time to make them look nice. First I have two more mosaics to do. I was working on one of them today and got pretty far. My deadline is Wednesday!

Grouting the Ladybug

I wish it was really this fast! In this video, you'll see me grouting the ladybug. You can also see flashes of my husband and my dog keeping me company. First the grout is spread, then I wipe off with a series of dry rags (old t-shirts are my favorite rags). There is a little detail picking with a toothbrush and a metal pick, then brush it off and I'm done!

Mosaic #3

Still ungrouted, but all the glass has been glued down. I hope to do some grouting on these first three tomorrow.
